Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found numerous other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important political figure stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
